Job Overview
A General Laborer is responsible for assisting contractors and construction crews with various site tasks. This role involves both manual labor and the operation of hand and power tools to facilitate construction projects. Laborers work outdoors in all weather conditions and are expected to demonstrate physical stamina, teamwork, and attention to safetyKey Responsibilities
- Site Preparation & Cleanup: Remove debris, set up work areas, and perform general site cleaning to maintain a safe and organized environment
- Material Handling: Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment around job sites
- Support Skilled Trades: Assist carpenters, masons, painters, electricians, and other craft workers with their tasks
- Temporary Structures: Assemble and dismantle scaffolding, ladders, barricades, and other temporary structures
- Equipment Operation: Operate hand tools, power tools, and small machinery such as compactors, forklifts, or generators, following proper safety protocols
- Manual Labor: Dig trenches, fill or compact earth, mix and pour concrete, and perform basic demolition work
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to OSHA standards, wear personal protective equipment,(PPE) and report unsafe conditions to supervisors
- Other Duties: Assist with traffic control, monitor construction progress, and perform duties assigned by site supervisors
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred, not always required
- Experience: Previous construction or laborer experience is beneficial but entry-level workers may receive on-the-job training
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy materials (often over 50 lbs), stand or walk for long periods, work at heights, and withstand extreme weather conditions
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with hand and power tools, basic equipment operation
- Soft Skills: Teamwork, communication, reliability, problem-solving, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic
- Licensing/Certifications: Valid driver’s license preferred; OSHA certifications or specialized equipment licenses may be advantageous
Work Environment
Construction laborers typically work on outdoor sites with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy machinery. Schedules may include early mornings, overtime, weekends, or travel to multiple job sites. Safety gear such as helmets, gloves, boots, and eye protection is required.
