Finance Director
Role Overview
The Finance Director reports to the Executive Director of Financial Services and is responsible for maintaining complete and accurate accounting records, overseeing expenditures, and preparing required financial reports for the School District and applicable state agencies. This position plays a critical role in ensuring fiscal integrity, transparency, and regulatory compliance. This role is essential to maintaining fiscal responsibility, regulatory compliance, and financial transparency across educational and support operations.
Key Responsibilities
Budget Preparation & Oversight
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and budget amendments for the General Fund, Debt Service Fund, and Capital Funds
- Monitor expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets
Financial Reporting
- Prepare the Annual Financial Report for submission to the Commissioner of Education and the Superintendent
- Complete and submit all required Department of Education financial status reports
Accounting & Reconciliation
- Prepare fiscal year-end and month-end closing entries
- Reconcile accounts and ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial statements
Federal & State Compliance
- Review and reconcile federal cash advance balances
- Verify project expenditures for compliance with federal and state requirements
- Assist with federal and state program funding requests and reporting
Fund Management
- Oversee accounting operations for direct support organizations, including but not limited to:
- Flagler Education Foundation
- Auditorium Governing Board
Team Supervision
- Supervise and support the work of:
- Accountants I & II
- Accounts Payable Clerks I & II
- Benefits/Payroll Supervisor
- Payroll Clerks I & II
- Purchasing Agent
Data & Technology Utilization
- Maintain accurate financial records using district-approved technology systems
- Prepare detailed technical financial reports
- Work with large and complex data sets to support financial decision-making
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 24 credit hours in accounting or a closely related field
Experience
- Considerable knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze, and interpret financial data
- Experience exercising judgment and preparing accurate and timely financial reports
Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in budgeting, data analysis, and financial reporting
- High level of technology competency and attention to detail
Reporting Structure
- Reports to: Executive Director of Financial Services
- Supervises: Multiple finance, payroll, and purchasing staff
