The employee operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools to perform construction, maintenance, and repair work on the water system. This includes using dump trucks, tapping machines, tamping machines, pipe saws, pipe locators, jackhammers, and hand tools. Responsibilities include transporting, loading, and unloading materials, locating and marking water lines, repairing pipeline breaks and leaks, conducting water taps, servicing fire hydrants, installing and repairing water meters, boring under roadways, digging trenches, packing dirt, and performing other manual labor as required. The employee also flags traffic and ensures work sites are safe for the crew and the public.

In addition, the role involves maintaining equipment and tools by performing inspections, checking and replacing fluids, greasing, cleaning, and reporting any faulty machinery. The employee ensures that trucks are stocked with necessary equipment, tools, and materials and completes required documentation such as work tickets, reports, maps, drawings, and correspondence. Effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, and the public via telephone or two-way radio is essential to relay information, respond to service requests, and provide general support to department operations.
